Can PDR Fix Every Dent?

Understanding the Limits of Paintless Dent Repair — and When It’s Time for Body Work

Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) is an incredible process — it’s fast, clean, cost-effective, and preserves your original paint. At Hail Team One, we use PDR on thousands of hail-damaged vehicles every year. But one question we get often is:

“Can PDR fix every dent?”

The short answer: Not always. While PDR is ideal for most hail damage, there are certain situations where it’s not the right tool — and where traditional body work becomes necessary.

Here’s what you need to know.

✅ When PDR Works Best

PDR is perfect for:

  • Small to medium-sized dents (think dime to half-dollar size)
  • Damage where the paint is still intact
  • Metal panels that haven’t been stretched or creased
  • Hail damage that is isolated and not deep

Because PDR doesn’t involve paint, sanding, or fillers, it preserves your factory finish — and that’s a huge win for maintaining your vehicle’s value.

🚫 When PDR Can’t Be Used

Here are the situations where PDR may not be enough:

1. Cracked or Chipped Paint

If hail or impact has broken through the clear coat or paint, PDR isn’t an option — the area must be refinished to prevent rust.

2. Sharp Creases or Stretched Metal

Dents that are sharp, deep, or have stretched the metal past its natural shape can’t always be pushed back into place cleanly.

3. Plastic or Composite Panels

PDR is designed for metal panels — so if your damage is on plastic bumpers or fenders, we’ll likely recommend traditional repairs.

4. Double Panel Areas or Obstructed Access

In some areas (like door edges or roof rails), it may be impossible to reach the back of the dent with PDR tools — which limits repair options.

What Happens If PDR Isn’t an Option?

That’s where Hail Team One still has you covered. Thanks to our exclusive in-house partnership with Advanced Collision & Dent, we also offer:

  • Traditional body work
  • Painting and refinishing
  • Panel replacement
  • Insurance-approved repairs for all types of damage

So even if PDR isn’t possible for every dent, we’ll still restore your vehicle — inside and out — with one seamless process.

How We Decide at Hail Team One

Every vehicle we repair starts with a full inspection using our specialized lighting system. We check for:

  • Paint integrity
  • Metal stretch
  • Access points
  • Location of dents

From there, we’ll let you know what can be fixed with PDR — and what might need conventional repair. And the best part? We handle all the insurance communication for you.

Bottom Line

Paintless Dent Repair is a powerful tool — but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. At Hail Team One, we’ll never oversell what PDR can do. Instead, we give you the best recommendation to make your car look brand new, no matter what type of damage it has.
